Voices of the Elders: they lived by the ancestral law

Yolŋu have cared for our Country since time immemorial. We have handed down our knowledges over millennia through sharing from our elders. We honour and revere the wisdom of our elders and their knowledges form the foundation of our society. Our elders have always been the ones to navigate and direct how to care for our Country and are just as important today in overseeing and directing our work. This will guide our renewed plans of management. It has been an honour to interview and learn from the elders from all of the bäpurru (Clans) in our region. They have shared their insights about how to manage Country from a Yolŋu perspective, how things have been done in the past and how we need to navigate into our futures. They have shared their worries and aspirations for how things should be done. They have spoken to our metaphors and teachings about how to live healthy and nourishing lives. Our elders are our libraries. We thank them for sharing their insights and invite you to listen and learn from their stories too.

“This is the history for the children for the future, so when we pass away we can pass this message to the children, our grandchildren, for all our children.”
