IPA Plans of Management
Indigenous Protected Areas are areas of land and sea Country that are dedicated by First Nations communities to be managed as a part of Australia’s National Reserve System (NRS). They are owned and operated by First Nations communities and funded by the Australian Government. The Dhimurru and Yirralka djäkami wäŋawu manage the Dhimurru IPA and Laynhapuy IPA in North-East Arnhem Land. Working together we manage an area of around 1,949,000ha of land and sea country across all the Yolŋu clan estates.
The Yolŋu Knowledge Framework aligns how we manage our IPAs through Yolŋu ways of caring for Country. The Framework sets our management directions and priorities and these are documented in the Dhimurru and Laynhapuy IPA Plans of Management. This creates a powerful region-wide approach to land and sea management across both IPAs.
Each IPA is required to have its own individual plan of management. The two plans below outlines the background to each organisation, and specific management actions and strategies for how we are caring for our IPAs.
